Today we welcomed students from Kaunas Gymnasium Varpas to the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence (ENSEC COE) to explore some thought-provoking questions:

  • What does “energy security” mean to you, and why is it important?
  • What do you identify as the main energy challenges facing Europe today?
  • How can young people contribute to a safer and more sustainable energy future?

Our goal was to raise young people’s awareness of energy security and its significance in our daily lives. Generation Z, known for its adept use of technology, may not realize how quickly that technology could become useless if electricity and other energy sources were suddenly cut off. Have they considered how a blackout could basically change their lives?

This visit was part of an initiative launched by the ENSEC COE, at the request of the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany. We aim to actively engage Generation Z in the crucial field of energy, amplifying their voices in the energy security debate and empowering them to shape the future of global energy resilience.

This initiative invites young people aged 14 to 29 from NATO member and partner countries to take the Youth Energy Resilience Challenge. Participants are encouraged to submit a short video reflecting on what a sudden, total loss of electricity would mean for their daily lives.
